We still keep a gate up in the hallway so he can't roam the entire house if he wakes up in the middle of the night. Mostly that is so I can have peace of mind and get some sleep myself.
Once in a while, we get the ladder out and let him climb up and check out the top bunk, but I think it will be awhile (10 years or so) before he gets to actually sleep up there. We're still waiting for one of the grandparents to test it out! : )
One one side of the bed are shelves that go all the way down to the bottom of the floor. (You can see this behind Jim in the last picture). One night we woke up to Cade crying and saying, "Daddy, I'm stuck! I'm stuck!" So Jim went in there to see what was going on and Cade had somehow squeezed down through the crack between his bed and the shelves and was on the bottom shelf! And we even keep a big body pillow in that space, so we have no idea how he got himself down there, but we got a chuckle out of it. We have also found him sleeping half on/half off the bed standing up, sleeping on the floor, and sleeping in the hallway.
